"""Volunteer Diggers"" It’s painstaking work. These diggers don’t go at it with backhoes. They carefully use hand-held shovels and tiny delicate tools as they uncover the past. The Fort Pierre Chouteau dig includes a professional archaeologist and an army of volunteers from middle school to retirees. They all have one thing in common – they really like what they do. The diggers are working to locate the precise location and dimensions of the fort, identify how much fort is left, and determine whether there are any areas threatened by erosion."
