"Awake"" Native American saxophonist Fred Whiteface has earned a place in musical history. The 76-year-old Rapid City man won Best Blues/ Jazz artist at the first annual Native American Music Awards held last May. Whiteface also was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Lakota musician originally taught himself to play as a child on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He started playing professional guitar at age 11 and later switched to saxophone. Whiteface has had a long professional career in teaching and in music, playing mostly in small jazz combo groups and in big bands."
